Sean Penn and Robin Wright Divorcing

This is really a shock. After eleven years of marriage, Sean Penn and long time wife Robin Wright are getting a divorce. In a world where divorce is an everyday thing and being in the news is normal, Sean Penn has been one of the few actors who hated that whole scene. I am sure he is hating this post, but I just gotta report it! Sorry, Sean, but if you are looking for a good woman, I am available! I have loved you for a very long time.

John Edwards' Hollywood Fans

It looks like Barack Obama is not the only presidential candidate who has star power behind him. Danny Glover has been a  long time supporter, as has Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon. Glover has made several campaign trips with Edwards, including a visit to New Orleans earlier this year, where the two helped build homes destroyed by hurricane Katrina.

In a society which places high value on the opinions of celebrities, the presidential race could look more like Hollywood Squares than anything else, huh?

Pakistani Terrorists Assassinate Bhutto

There seems to be no such thing as democracy allowed today in Pakistan. Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated by a suicide bomber as she left a campaign rally. At least 20 others also died, according to police and witnesses.

Supporters of Bhutto rioted in the southern port city of Karachi after her killing, firing shots at police, setting tires and cars on fire and burning a gas station. At the hospital where Bhutto died, her supporters smashed glass and wailed, chanting slogans against President Pervez Musharraf. Musharraf blamed Islamic extremists and said he would redouble his efforts to fight them.

"This is the work of those terrorists with whom we are engaged in war," he said in a nationally televised speech. "I have been saying that the nation faces the greatest threats from these terrorists. ... We will not rest until we eliminate these terrorists and root them out."

The death of the charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 election into chaos and created fears of mass protests and an eruption of violence across the volatile south Asian nation. The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed a rally of thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. She was shot in the neck and chest by the attacker, who then blew himself up, said Rehman Malik, Bhutto's security adviser. Sardar Qamar Hayyat, a leader from Bhutto's party, said he was standing about 10 yard away from Bhutto's vehicle.

Quality Movies

I gotta tell you, I am impressed by the quality of the movies that are up for Golden Globes this year. Two of those movies that I really want to see are I AM LEGEND with Will Smith and THE GREAT DEBATERS with Denzel Washington. I AM LEGEND broke box office records with its opening, and THE GREAT DEBATERS is said to be the kind of movie where you leave feeling full of hope.  Have you seen either one of these? If so, stop by and tell us about it!

Thank God It's Over!

I am sorry, but I have never been so glad to see the end of a holiday in my life. It almost makes me wish they'd just cancel Christmas. It doesn't seem that people even care what the real meaning of Christmas is anyway. It's all about money and STUFF!

I breathed a huge sigh of relief last night when I went to bed, knowing that the sunrise would bring back the normalcy of regular life. What about you? Do you think I am being a Scrooge or do you feel the same?

Merry Christmas!

I am posting this message on all of my blogs this morning. I am making myself take a vacation from blogging. I have been working 6 and sometimes 7 days a week for a year and it is time to give it a rest. My mind and body need it. But it will be hard to stay off of the computer! Jeez! I didn't know how addicted I was to the internet until my computer crashed last month. However, if I do get online I have made myself a promise that it will only be for fun, no blogging until the day after Christmas, no reading about blogging or making money, no social networking unless its just for fun. I have turned into a workaholic and this workaholic MUST take some time off! I am going to read, watch movies, and eat! I have a bad cold and I am going to give myself the TLC I need so that I can be bright eyed and bushy tailed come the new year! 2008 is going to be a great year, I just feel it. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Christmas and I will see you next week!

Josh Groban Breaks Elvis' Record!

Josh Groban's NOEL is number one for the fourth straight week, something that has never been accomplished by a holiday album. Elvis Presley set the previous record, three weeks, with 1957's Elvis' Christmas Album.

For the week ended Sunday, Noël topped the charts and broke the record books by selling 669,000 copies.

Groban has sold nearly 2.8 million copies of NOEL in its 10-week run. That makes NOEL the leader of the year's bestselling album, and if the trend holds, it'll become the first holiday album to top year-end sales.

Obama on Foreign Relations

I read this article at ABC News' Political Radar this morning that makes me live Barak Obama even better than I already did. In the article he states what he has claimed all along, that if he were president he would talk to the enemy. He has been criticized highly for this way of thinking, and that makes me worry much more than what he said. What ever happened to the saying, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer?" Obama is of the belief that military action should be a last, not a first, resort. Can you say, "It's about time?" Someday, somewhere down the road we have got to get our politicians to stop thinking so much about power and ego and start considering peace and the loss of human life. Maybe Obama can make that happen.

Celebrity Edition of "The Apprentice"

I cannot WAIT for the January 10th first episode of the celebrity version of "The Apprentice!" I am a huge apprentice fan, but adding celebrities is going to really rock this show.  Contestants will not be vying for a job with Donald Trump, but will raise over a million dollars for their various charities throughout the season. Not only will the final winner be crowned the first 'Celebrity Apprentice,' but he or she will also have the honor of delivering a $250,000 bonus check to their designated charity.

HERE IS A LIST OF THE CANDIDATES:

Country music star TRACEY ADKINS, model/actress CAROL ALT, actor STEPHEN BALDWIN, Olympic gymnast NADIA COMANECI, Playboy Playmate TIFFANY FALLON, Olympic softball player JENNIE FINCH, Latina media dynamo NELY GALÃN, actress MARILU HENNER, heavyweight-boxing champion LENNOX LEWIS, "Apprentice" alum OMAROSA, "America's Got Talent" judge PIERS MORGAN, Ultimate Fighting Champion TITO ORTIZ, actor VINCENT PASTORE, and KISS bassist GENE SIMMONS. OMAROSA?? TITO ORTIZ? GENE SIMMONS?? This is going to be a hoot!

Break Time!

I thought I'd take a break from the business of reporting news and doing reviews to offer up my personal viewpoint on taking a break. I have been working like a demon to increase my blog traffic since the advent of real rank at PPP. And it is working! My blog traffic has doubled in little over 3 weeks and still climbing.

But taking a break is necessary for optimum productivity. Nobody can function on half a tank. So this afternoon, after receiving the book I ordered called Everyday Sacred, I am getting on the couch with this book and not doing another thing, at least after I finish the post after this one, (I have one more review to do)

Are you taking the time you need for yourself?

ABC's Political Radar

I have been spending some time searching for the best place to keep up with political news without the bias of one party over the other. I think I found that spot today with ABC's blog section and their political radar. I just read a blog entry about what Hillary thinks about the people who don't like her. Check this out if you want, like me, to keep up with what's going on but want to make up your own mind how you feel about what you hear and read and not be swayed.

Can Pamela Anderson Get Along with ANY Man?

I was reading a couple of other entertainment blogs this morning and saw that rumor has it that Pam Anderson and her brand new third, or fourth, can't keep track, husband were already getting a divorce. But I went to Pam's website and read her blog and it says they are working things out. But what is the deal? I bet she's a be-atch to live with.

Dan Folgeberg Dies at 56

Dan Folgerberg was best known for his song "Leader of the Band." Dan died Sunday at his home with his wife, Jean, by his side. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004 but the cancer was treated and went into remission. However, as happens, it came back.

I am sad to hear of this great singer, songwriter dying so young. I have a lot of wonderful memories of listening to his soft rock songs in the 70s and 80s.

Random Acts of Kindness

I get the feeling that people I know online think I am all business and a bit aloof, but what I am about to tell you I think will change your mind. I live in a very urban, though eclectic, neighborhood near downtown Dallas. If you look out my kitchen window you will see mansions, if you look out my living room window you will often see homeless people walking down the street or people catching the bus.

Up until two years ago I had never lived in a big city. I was born and raised and lived almost forever in a small, affluent, suburban town and I always had a car, which I don't now. So you can imagine the culture shock I felt when I ended up in East Dallas, afoot and now alone. But instead of being afraid or intimidated, I feel blessed. Everyday I try to find some way to do something nice for someone I see, as I walk to the donut shop, the grocery store, the convenience store, etc. While I sit and wait for the bus to carry me to the library I talk to the people there. I make sure and speak to those I pass on the street. Several times I have taken old clothes across the street to the halfway house that is there.

I have learned a very valuable lesson in all of this. Every human life is precious and each one deserves respect, no matter their circumstances. Acts of kindness should never be random, they should be part of our daily lives, an afterthought, a part of living.

Mike Huckabee's Son Dog Killer

I read this story at Crooks and Liars and it made me sick. But hopefully this will put Mike Huckabee so far out of the running you won't be able to even see him on the radar anymore, thank God.

His son, David, was kicked out of the Boy Scouts after he and a friend hung a stray dog from a tree, slashed its throat and then stoned it until it was dead. Nice family you got there, Mikey.

Comedy Central's Indecision 2008

I just discovered this site while cruising the sidebar of Crooks and Liars. Comedy Central's Indecision 2008 is one big hilarious spoof, but with real opinions and news on politics.

I enjoyed myself thoroughly and if you have a sense of humor about politics--is that an oxymoron?--you will too. Check it out and have some good laughs while you learn the REAL deal.

Hillary Sinking Fast

I have been reading a lot of political blogs over the last few days and was shocked to learn that Hillary Clinton is getting tons of hate email. One blog even said that the name Hillary has forever been tainted as a name for your baby. Hillary is also losing ground, and fast, in the polls. She lost ten percent of her women voters in the Iowa polls.

I have to say that I agree with some of the things I read in the emails about Hillary. She does appear to be very self serving and her association with less than above board financial situations and what appears to be her heavy handedness are two points that are definitely not in her favor. I seriously doubt you will be seeing Hillary Clinton on the Democratic ticket.

Worried about Britney Spears

I really wish the paparazzi would leave Britney Spears alone, but that won't happen.

Not even bloggers will give her a break. I know she's done some stupid stuff, but who hasn't? I am afraid this girl is about ready to self implode. And if she does, THAT is when everyone will be all sugar and, "poor Britney!" People make me sick sometimes.  Oopsies??? Get a life, dudes.

Pamela Anderson and Husband to Star in E! Reality Show

First of all, I didn't even know that Pamela Anderson had gotten married! But she did, on October 6th in Las Vegas to Rick Salomon. (He's a cutie, huh?) I did some research on him because I didn't know who the heck he was and learned that Salomon is the son of a former executive vice president at Warner Bros.

Salomon first became well-known after his short and volatile marriage to actress Shannen Doherty. (Poor dude!) The marriage was annulled after only nine months because Doherty was upset with Salomon's continuing relationship with Paris Hilton. And it looks like Shannon wasn't imagining things because I also learned that Salomon is none other than the man in the infamous sex tape with Paris Hilton. That means he and wife Pam have one big thing in common! Now news has it that Pam and her husband Rick will headline a new reality show on E! that is scheduled to premiere next year. The show will center around their married life, including their partying at various Vegas clubs and, yes, their work with the homeless, according to the magazine.

Christmas Music

Being single here at Christmas I find that the best thing about the season is the music. I found a radio station that is playing only Christmas music, old tunes, like Jingle Bells and White Christmas, and it really DOES help get you in the spirit of Christmas. I can't help but smile as memories surround me while I listen to these songs. It makes me grateful that I have these memories to keep me company.

Madonna Backing Hillary Clinton?

The day after Oprah hit the campaign trail to show her support for presidential candidate Barack Obama, drawing record crowds, reports have begun to surface that Madonna will be backing Hillary Clinton. The power of celebrities has never before been this influential in my experience. If the rumors are true, Obama may get a run for his money, for it will be about who's fans of Oprah or Madonna rather than the nominees. Fair? No. Reality? Yes.

But when contacted by Access Hollywood, Madonna’s rep said that while the singing superstar appreciates Hillary, she hasn’t “formally” backed her. “Madonna has not formally endorsed Hillary Clinton. She’s certainly spoken highly of her, but that’s it,” the rep told Access. However, Hillary DOES have star power behind her in the form of Barbara Streisand. And that's a BIG deal!

Jeopardy's Alex Trebek has Heart Attack

I don't know who doesn't love long time “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek. I was sad to learn that Alex Trebek was hospitalized after suffering a minor heart attack.  Mr. Trebek is 67 years old and was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center late Monday night and was expected to remain there about two days for tests and observation, said show spokesman Jeff Ritter.  “Thankfully it was a minor heart attack,” Ritter said. He did not give other details.

Janice Dickinson calls Tyra Banks "Fat"

Photo of Janise Dicinson
I really cannot stand Janice Dickinson and now I have reason to like her even less. The brash, rude, obnoxious host of "The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency", can you say EGO?, called her former boss on “America’s Next Top Model,” Tyra Banks, “fat.” She was talking with Al Roker on the “Today” show in an appearance to promote the third series of her television show.

Janice later claimed her remark was a joke that she made when Al Roker asked her what she thought of the body image debate surrounding Jennifer Love Hewitt. (And that's another thing I'm mad about, along with Ellen, who made a big deal about this on her show a few days ago, fat does not wear a size 6! people!) “Jennifer Love Hewitt is healthy, not emaciated, woman,” Janice said. You wanna see someone fat? I’m sorry, Tyra, Tyra Banks is fat. This girl is not fat.”

Mr. Roker asked Janice why she would make such a comment about Tyra and she said, “Well she is,” before quickly changing her tune. “I’m kidding ‘cause I love Miss Banks,” she said. “[My remark was] off the cuff, but there’s a controversy to build up your show by selling fat one week and thin the other. In the modeling industry, yes you have to be thin.” But your lips have to be fat, right Janice? :(

Will Smith Backs Barack Obama

Will Smith has joined Oprah Winfrey by using his star power to help Barack Obama in his bid for the White House. Smith told Access Hollywood, “I’m available for whatever he needs." Will Smith even called Obama over the phone to let him know that he was ready and willing to help in any way possible. “I’m not politically savvy as far as what to do, when to do it and how, so essentially I said, ‘I’m here. I support you and you let me know what you need,’” Will revealed of his chat with Obama.

As far as I can tell, Barack Obama is the most attractive runner we have so far, and I am not just talking about looks. He's a sharp guy, very intelligent and personable. I am just worried that there are factions in this country who will be gunning for him once they figure out he is actually a real threat to the presidency. But I am sure he is very aware of that. Good luck, Mr. Obama. So far you have my vote.

Controversy Surrounding the Movie "The Golden Compass"

There is outrage being expressed all across the internet over the new movie, "The Golden Compass," starring Nicole Kidman. People are mad because they say that the film is anti-religious and pro-atheism. But after reading this review by Roger Ebert I get the feeling that once again, like they often do, the far right has gone off on a tangent just because God is involved in the plot. It's just a movie folks. Did you get angry when George Burns played God in a movie? Or John Travolta was a cigarette smoking, womanizing angel?  And all you are really doing is creating more interest in wanting to see it.  I am not much on fantasy movies, but this one sounds like a cross between "Lord of the Rings" and "Rosemary's Baby" to me, which would make quite a fantastic film.

Closed Captioning Service

I think one of the most wonderful technological advances ever invented is closed captioning service. When I see those words gliding across the screen all I can do is be grateful for my hearing. Can you imagine living in a world without sound? But there are millions of people who do, and it is great that they can enjoy a television program just as easily as you and I with the advent of closed captioning.

But closed captioning has other uses as well. Maybe you want to leave the volume down on the TV for a certain reason. You can, and still be able to see what is being said by the characters.

Shooting at Two Colorado Religious Organizations

It gets pretty scary when you have to wonder if you will get killed when you go to the one place on earth where you should be able to feel safe, the house of God. But early this morning police searched a house in Englewood, Colorado that may be linked to the deadly shootings at religious organizations this weekend in a small town called Arvada, near Colorado Springs. The first shooting was at a Christian missionary center and the second at a Colorado Springs megachurch. The gunman and four victims are now dead and six people wounded. The Chief of Police of the city of Arvada, Don Wick, said there is reason to believe the shootings are related.

The gunman, clad all in black, attacked members of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, killing one person and wounding four. He was killed by "a courageous security staff member," Colorado Springs Police Chief Richard Myers said.

One of the four people who were wounded died late Sunday. Chief Myers said authorities from the two communities were cooperating in their investigations. Witnesses say the black-clad gunman matched the description issued by Arvada police after the slayings in their town. Brady Boyd, the senior pastor at New Life Church, said leaders of the nondenominational, evangelical congregation of more than 10,000 had beefed up security after the Arvada attacks. "Many lives were saved because of the quick action of some committed volunteers at our church," Boyd said. He said about 7,000 people were at the church. I know, I know, this is not the end of the world, but I sure do wish it were the end of guns in the hands of nuts.

UK Man Fakes Own Death

John Darwin, 57, is currently being questioned by police in northeastern England following his arrest on suspicion of fraud, a spokesman for Cleveland Police, the force investigating the case, has said.He walked into a police station in London last weekend -- five years after he was thought to have died after the remains of a canoe he paddled into the North Sea, off northeastern England, washed up on shore. Mr. Darwin faked his own death to avoid mounting debts. But his wife said he missed his grown children and was tired of being "dead."

Donald Trump Tipping Story a Hoax

The story that has been floating around that Donald Trump quietly tipped a waiter $10,000 at Santa Monica’s Buffalo Club is not true.  The Donald says he wasn't even in California. A site called Derober.com published a copy of a Master Card receipt with Trump tipping $10,000 on an $82.27 bill after dining at the Buffalo Club, but Trump told Page Six it was a hoax. "This was done by the stupid restaurant to get publicity," he said. ". . . It's not my signature." The Web site not only ran an interview with waiter Billy D but also posted a video of the supposed server walking to his car.

The Laws of Attraction

I definitely believe that as the bible says, "Reap what you sow." Nowadays they have dressed this one phrase of wisdom from God into a multi-million dollar industry with books like The Secret, that basically say the same thing, whatever you put out into the universe is what you will get back. In the mid sixties we called it Karma. Same message, life is like a boomerang, do bad and bad will come back to bite you, do good and that too will follow.

I think it's humorous that people need that message from the bible wrapped up in prettier clothes with a hefty price tag attached and the name of the newest flavor of guru to listen. Bible's a cheap, buy one for Christmas.

Gunman Opens Fire at Omaha Shopping Mall, Kills 7 and Self

Merry frigging Christmas.

This is breaking news. From CNN. A gunman killed eight people and wounded five others Wednesday at the popular Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, before apparently turning the gun on himself, police said. They also say in the article from CNN that people were hiding in the clothes racks. Can you imagine shopping for Christmas presents and this happening?  What can I say? What a horrible thing to happen during the holidays.

An Accident Waiting to Happen

A report out of Washington says that there is a very good chance of an two airplanes colliding sometime in the near future. Here are the bleak facts:

  • Congressional investigators report no single office addressing runway safety issue

  • Number of dangerous runway incidents spiked in FY 2007, GAO report says

  • FAA taking chances, "ignoring too many red flags," senator says

  • Report also cites traffic controllers' fatigue, routine six-day work weeks

Tina Fey Slams Paula Abdul

Tina Fey, in an interview in the latest issue of Playboy, slams Paula Abdul's performance in 2005 as the host of Saturday Night Live. “I was pregnant at the time and probably a little moody, but I remember thinking, ‘She’s a disaster! I gotta prop this lady up.” Fey said Abdul was “disastrous … in the way she generally appears to be. “It was an American Idol sketch; she wanted to change parts. So Amy Poehler had to play her.” I, like so many of you, have wondered for a long time what the deal is with Paula Abdul. Is she nuts? On drugs? I just don't know, but she sure does act crazy, huh?

The Perfect Man

I have to tell you. I once thought that Robert Redford was the perfect man. He was gorgeous and he has always been involved in worthy causes. It is so weird, because the first time I saw Brad Pitt in "Thelma and Louise" I thought he looked so much like the young Robert Redford. And now I see that this perfect man is always putting his efforts into making the world a better place, just like Robert Redford did.

Brad is among those helping the most vulnerable in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward. He told Larry King when he was on his show about the 150 affordable homes being built post-Hurricane Katrina, and why the project means so much to him, as well as the people who will live there. And this is just the tip of the iceberg for Brad and his humanitarian efforts.

A Poem of Mine

Bird Church
On a long black pew sit our feathered friends,

First giving thanks for a leaf-free view of their God.

A loner in the morning mist, hunched down in his gray coat,

steals glances at the rest of the congregation.

Communing in the form of respectful silence,

the birds save their singing for a less holy time; or for danger.

The hierarchy is evident,

even the deacons give reverence to Pastor Bird.

The service is a short one, a sermon on patience,

but a few rudely exit while the pastor is still preaching.

Closing prayer brings hearty twitters of wish you wells; and fly with God,

as the birds soar away to work for Nature and family.

Left sitting on the wire, the loner is in no hurry.

He’s a bachelor, free to fly at his leisure.

Still, every morning at Bird Church, he prays

to meet the crimson coated bird of his dreams.

Jesse Jackson Speaks at Sean Taylor's Funeral

While my son was waiting to leave for his flight back to Florida yesterday we watched the funeral of Washington Redskin's Sean Taylor, who was murdered by some punks in his own home. It was a sad affair, that funeral, and tears came to my eyes as Jesse Jackson talked about violence and what a terrible thing it is that we live with it everyday. Here is to you Sean. It was easy to see that you were a great guy who was loved by many. May you rest in peace.

Bah Humbug!

I am sorry, I am really trying to get in the Christmas spirit but it is hard when you start having Christmas music and Christmas movies, and decorations everywhere before we are even done with Thanksgiving. As a middle aged person I will tell you that this is not always the way it was. When I was younger you didn't see Christmas stuff in the stores, here Christmas music or see movies until around two weeks before Christmas. What about you? Do you love it that all this starts so early or are you a Scrooge like me?

Anxious for Results of Joe Kennedy Autopsy

I have had Joe Kennedy on  my mind ever since he suddenly collapsed and died at the age of 28 a few weeks ago.
But research shows me this morning that medical tests to determine the cause of death of the well liked, talented left-handed pitcher are expected to take six to eight weeks.

Kennedy pitched for three major league teams last season and spent seven years in the major leagues, playing last season with Oakland, Arizona and Toronto. He also spent time with Tampa Bay and Colorado. He had an impressive 43-61 career record with a 4.79 ERA in 222 appearances.

The Ties that Bind

I hadn't seen my son in a year, he's been traveling the country, working. But when he came into town Thursday, seeing him, hugging him, spending time with him this weekend, made me realize how easy family are together. We picked up as if no time had passed at all, I cooked dinner last night while he watched sports and played around on my computer, on MySpace. I had to laugh. I don't know what I expected, my thoughts about how things would be before he got here seemed as if I were preparing for a guest. However, even though he is 28 and has a family, it was like he was back in high school, me the mom and him the kid. It was comforting, and I smiled as I fell asleep last night, hearing his voice in the living room, on the phone, of course. :)

Britney's 26th Birthday Bash

Britney Spears turned 26 this weekend and celebrated by attending a party where guest like Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton were in attendance too.

Gossip Girls has great pictures of Britney in her fur coat and also of her blowing out the candles on her cake. They also say that Britney was reported to have taken a good looking man home with her from the party. As they said, Happy Birthday indeed!

National Anthem Left out of NFL Pregame

I was shocked when I read this post and the ton of comments at DenverPost.Com. Because of bad weather conditions a decision was made by the higher ups of the Pittsburg Steelers not to sing the national anthem before the game between the Steelers and the Miami Dolphins.

That's heresy! And you will read the outrage in the post and in the comments, though some of the comments are just plain stupid.

Evel Knievel Dies at 69

Known and recognized by the Smithsonian Institute as "America's Legendary Daredevil" Evil Knievel died yesterday at his home at the age of 69. I always loved watching him do his stunts. He was best known for a failed attempt to jump an Idaho canyon on a rocket-powered cycle and a spectacular crash at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. He suffered nearly 40 broken bones before he retired in 1980. Have fun jumping cars in heaven, Evel!
